ACT pledges charity donation for staff ‘Everest’ cycling bid

ACT Construction Director Scott Weir begins an impressive cycling challenge today. The keen cyclist hopes to ride the total elevation of Everest during the month of March.

To give Scott some extra motivation, ACT director Ken Godsman has pledged to donate £500 to charity when he completes the “Everesting” challenge.

The donation will go to Unite Against Cancer. Colin Smith, from the Scottish charity, says: “We are delighted that ACT has chosen to support Unite Against Cancer as part of the Everesting Challenge by pledging to donate £500 upon its completion.

“Our charity would like to wish Scott Weir the very best of luck with his efforts.”

Scott will aim to “Everest” on his mountain bike in March.

Scott’s Everesting bid

The aim of an Everesting challenge is to cycle the same elevation as the world’s tallest mountain. This amounts to 8,848m or 29,028ft – and Scott hopes to do this by bike in just one month – and try to achieve it almost entirely on trails.

Scott is a keen off-road cyclist and bought his first mountain bike as part of the Cycle to Work Scheme. He enjoys off-road cycling and will be looking for as many hills as possible during the month of his Everesting campaign.

Scott says: “It’s a very tough challenge. I have looked back at Strava records to see how much elevation I generally gain each month on my bike and it’s nowhere near the height of Everest.

“I do like a challenge though and it will be a great way to get fit for the summer and and to prepare for the Glentress Seven endurance mountain biking event in May.

“Everesting is such a good idea because it gives you a definite goal and one that should be achievable if I really focus.

“I am delighted that ACT will be backing me in my challenge and donating £500 to a very worthy charity.”

We will be keeping track of Scott’s progress over his month of Everesting and reporting his total height gain on this blog and in our social media posts. Do keep an eye out for them and encourage Scott to keep going.
